Acting Inspector General
Acting Inspector General Caryl Brzymialkiewicz joined the Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) in September 2020 as the Deputy Inspector General. As the Deputy Inspector General, Caryl Brzymialkiewicz, Ph.D., is also designated as first assistant to the Inspector General. In that capacity, she now serves as the acting Inspector General.
As Acting Inspector General, Dr. Brzymialkiewicz leads the full range of OIG activities, including implementing strategic initiatives, directing the OIG’s nationwide audit and investigations programs, supervising legal and administrative management programs, and engaging with critical stakeholders, including Department leadership and members of Congress and their staffs.
Prior to her service at DOI OIG, Dr. Brzymialkiewicz was the first Chief Data and Analytics Officer within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General. There, she created an enterprise data and analytics office focused on empowering OIG staff to use data proactively to support oversight of a portfolio encompassing more than $1.4 trillion. Prior to HHS OIG, Dr. Brzymialkiewicz served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Risk and Decision Analysis at the Department of Homeland Security and the Operations Research Division Chief at the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization. As the leader of a team at the Center for Naval Analyses, Dr. Brzymialkiewicz oversaw crucial work optimizing the detection and countering of roadside bombs in Afghanistan and in Iraq. Her leadership roles have included building and sustaining high-performance, multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality products for decision making and action to address these complex problems.
Dr. Brzymialkiewicz earned a B.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.
